Statement on Roe v. Wade

“The GW College Democrats fundamentally and vehemently condemn this decision from a radical conservative court. The violation of abortion rights not only goes against this nation’s secular foundations, it further destroys reproductive autonomy. In a world where children fear for their lives and parents are fearful for their children, we can not be distracted by “pro-life” façades. There was nothing “pro-life” about this ruling. This decision is a tremendous step backward for all Americans and a violation of the inalienable rights of women in this country. Advocates have branded this decision as protecting unborn children.

“It is not that.

“It is a privileged and ignorant decision made by people who will not be affected. It is heartbreaking to know that the rights of women and non-binary people will continue to be challenged in a nation that promotes freedom and democracy.

“We must advocate for the marginalized communities disproportionately affected by this ruling. We can not sit idly by as spectators while our rights are being infringed upon. Now more than ever, it is crucial that we elect pro-choice legislators and leaders that will defend and expand the right to an abortion and quality reproductive healthcare.”
