Statement on Dr. Bitler and Dr. Matta
"GW College Democrats unequivocally condemn the actions of Dr. Alicia Bitler and Dr. Marie Matta, and stand with the students who have been victimized, traumatized, and hurt by those who ignore the profound impacts of their hateful actions.
"Students—especially students of color and students with disabilities—have been traumatized by the shameless hate that is tolerated within our classrooms. At an institution of higher education like GW—one that prides itself on progress, innovation, and excellence—this is shameful, it is embarrassing, and it is a moral failing. We cannot let these behaviors and these actors continue at the expense of our classmates. To those who have bravely come forward to share their truth: we see you, we hear you, and we support you.
"The actions of Dr. Bitler and Dr. Matta are reprehensible and disgusting. However, they are not isolated. GW has a long, documented history of tolerating, perpetrating, and celebrating racism and discrimination. As Black History Month approaches, we recommit ourselves to the work of anti-racism and to the work of rooting out all forms of hatred and bigotry in our University community so that we can live up to our motto: Raise High.
"President Wrighton has said that he is committed to improving diversity, equity, and inclusion at GW, and has made rebuilding trust with the University community a core goal of his administration. Now is the time for President Wrighton to go beyond the tired talking points and to put words into action. President Wrighton and University leadership must hold these two professors—and any others who foster a hateful and destructive environment in our classrooms—accountable and to ensure that these events never happen again."
